Bringing some much needed big blockbuster feel to SXSW is Charlize Theron and James McAvoy's latest film Atomic Blonde. This action packed nail-biter stars Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton an undercover agent for M16 who travels to Berlin to investigate the murder of another agent and to recover a watch which contains a list of all of M16's double agents. Along the way, she has to work with the Berlin agent David Percival (McAvoy) who is a complete crazy trainwreck of a man. Lock in for this one because once it kicks off you're in for one hell of a ride.
Theron has a knack for playing very strong female characters and Lorraine is the epitome of a bad ass. She can fight, she won't take any shit from anyone and unlike many less believable action films, she understands that getting hit in the face repeatedly hurts like hell and will leave a mark. McAvoy's character David is also amusing as hell to watch. He is the guy you know you always need to keep an eye on because you never really know what his crazy ass is going to do next. Help you? Hurt you? Anything goes with David. It feels a lot like McAvoy is channeling parts of his character from the movie Filth. It is also important to know that John Goodman's does a pretty great job as the CIA man in this movie. His role isn't huge, but it is always entertaining when he and Lorraine are on screen together.
This was easily one of the best films to premiere at SXSW. If you aren't in it for the story, the soundtrack will literally blow your mind. Director David Leitch has nailed it with this movie. It is action packed, sexy, and savage all in the same breath. Theron gives several intense fighting performances and, crazy enough, actually trained with Keanu Reeves for awhile while he was training for John Wick: Chapter 2. It is also cool to note that this film is based on the Graphic Novel The Coldest City (because lately, all the best shows and films are).
We gave this film a solid A+. Great performances and action with a killer story and soundtrack. What more could you want? of course, audiences will have to wait until July to sink their teeth into this one, but you could always pick up the graphic novel if the wait becomes too much for you.
Atomic Blonde opens in theaters July 28th, 2017.
