Movies like that were just so bad, they were also kind of awesome to watch. Keeping all those flicks in mind, let us now take a look at Turbo Kid, a film set in the post-apocalyptic time of 1997 where a young orphaned boy is struggling to survive in the wasteland. Things take a dark turn when he gets mixed up with a strange girl named Apple, who is kidnaped by a psychotic warlord. He must put his childish fears aside and step up to become the superhero Turbo Kid to rescue the girl and save the day.
One thing I love about this movie is that if it came on TV today you would swear that you are watching a film from 1982. It is kinda awesome how this film can return you to your childhood. The story is campy as hell, but it is sweet and fun to watch. It is a parody of several sci-fi flicks from that era, with a bunch of Tarantino style gore mixed in. Seriously, some of the death scenes are crazy over the top which just add to the humor of this story. Plus everyone cruises around on old school BMX bikes. When was the last time you took a bad guy serious on a BMX? Doesn't even matter, because in this movie they are not asking you to. The filmmakers, Anouk Whissell, François Simard, Yoann-Karl Whissell, went in knowing exactly what type of movie they were making and executed it perfectly. I think this film will really resonate with the older crowd or at least the crowd who grew up with these types of movies and characters, some of the younger generations may miss a lot of the humor and style. The cast, Aaron Jeffrey, Laurence Leboeuf, Michael Ironside, Munro Chambers, didn't disappoint either. Munro Chambers as Turbo Kid was on point, but Laurence Leboeuf, as apple, really stole the show for me. Her overly upbeat character who was always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed was fun to watch.
Overall, I would give this one a B- for taking me back to another time and making me smile while it does it. The movie has a lot of heart and silly fun to it. It's not really a kid movie, so don't let the title fool you. This film is littered with F-bombs, so leave the younger kiddos at home, but for the big kids in all of us don't miss Turbo Kid.
Turbo Kid opens August 28th at the Alamo Drafthouse - Vintage Park.
It was a different time people.....
If you grew up in the 80's you are fully aware of the type of cheesy over-the-top action movies that decade provided us with. Yes, we had many things like The Goodies and Weird Science, but we also had things like Solarbabies. See below:
