It is time to head back into the world of indie films and with that, we sat down and had a chance to watch Me, Myself and Her Italy's first feature lesbian romantic comedy. The movie stars Margherita Buy and Sabrina Ferilli as Federica and Marina, a lesbian couple who are living out a normal life in Italy. The couple has been together for five years and has found their perfect routine....or so it would seem. Everything is great until Marina (a former actress) gets the opportunity to step back onto the silver screen. Federica, not wanting to be outed for the world to scrutinize begins questioning their relationship, her sexuality, and her life as she knows it. When a chance meeting with an old male crush turns into a full on fling, not even the beautiful Italian countryside can save these two.

I know the director, Maria Sole Tognazzi, was trying to find a balance between comedy and drama with this film but I feel like trying to make this into a lighter movie than it should have been really hurts the story. Think of it like this, you are your significant other are together for five years and during that time, your partner consistently acts like they are ashamed or embarrassed admit to others that they are with you, only to find out that after five years they decided to cheat on you because of an insecure whim and then when confronted about it they suddenly act like they are the victim here. Frustrating, right? You will spend a good portion of this film rooting for this relationship to fail because only one of them is even marginally likable and the other is so repressed that you almost want to give her a good shake and scream "Show some real emotion, Dammit!!"

You get that Federica is not comfortable in her own skin and it is hard owning up to the fact that she is now at the very least bisexual. She goes out of her way to proclaim how much of a lesbian she isn't to her partner of 5 years before jumping into bed with a man. No doubt to prove how not gay she actually is. It was taxing to watch at times. Marina is so in love with this very unloveable woman who like every person int he film refers to as a super cold bitch. It is like watching your friend dating a trainwreck and not even understanding how they can be attracted to that. It will leave you perplexed at the very least trying to figure out why these two were even together in the first place. Actually, that may have helped the film if we had seen them getting together before jumping in on the jaded couple we are currently faced with.

We had to score this one with a C- just for the sheer frustration we felt watching it. I understand not all LGBT films can be like the like and upbeat Imagine Me & You or movies like that, but this movie feels like a stretch on so many levels that we don't have the time to get into. So if you are looking for a film about " a breezy lesbian story of two women with very different pasts who weather the challenges of life and romance together." (Actual quote from the synopsis) Then maybe this may be something for you to check out. The story just wasn't there for me, but who knows, much life the characters in the film, I suppose there is something out there for everyones tastes.

Me, Myself and Her hits DVD and Video on Wolfe Video on December 6th.
