If big action is what you are seeking at the box office this weekend then look no further than Mark Wahlberg's latest film Mile 22. In this intense action flick, we meet James (Wahlberg) who is a highly trained American military intelligence officer who runs a team known only as Overwatch. When the best of the best fail, Overwatch is the last line of defense and the people who work with it are essentially ghosts. In Mile 22 several cases of highly deadly material that can be used to create 6 atom bombs are stolen and only a mysterious police officer named Li Noor (Iko Uwais) knows exactly where they have been taken to. He demands safe passage out of the country to the USA before he will share their location with American intelligence. With everyone in Indonesia trying to assassinate Li, Overwatch is the only unit that may be able to escort him the 22 miles to safety.
I headed into this film not really knowing much about it. The film itself is rather short, coming in at about a half and a half runtime. The movie wastes no time in kicking all sorts of ass right from the get-go. If you are a fan of fight scenes then you need to run to the theater to check this one out because they are insane and totally worth watching. The casting is not too shabby either. Lauren Cohan places Alice, James's right-hand woman, the brains because much of their efforts are handled by a man named Bishop (John Malkovich) and you will probably recognize one team member for her actual real-life fighting skills Ronda Rousey who plays a part of the team's muscle in the role of Sam Snow. Having people with real-life actual fighting experience made a huge difference. Plus getting people involved with MMA training just takes the fighting styles to a whole new level.
I am not sure what I was expecting from this film. I set the bar fairly low because of the short run time and was just expecting another thrown together action flick with way too many other the top tricks, but surprisingly I got something entirely different. This is a solid action/intelligence movie. The plot is just insane with all its twists and turns. I am not going to lie, there were several things that happened that I completely did not see coming, which just adds to the fun of the film. It is one hell of a ride. I also learned that director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg are hoping to turn this film into a trilogy which I am 100% on board for because this is a fun movie. We scored this one with a B+ and highly recommend that you check it out. It is a great film to wind down the summer blockbusters. I can only hope this movie does well at the box office because I need more of this story in my life. If the people that were sitting around me were any indication of the reaction audiences may have to this fil then Mile 22 is set for a pretty strong weekend release. So prepare to be on the edge of your seat for a short but intense action-filled ride that is Mile 22.
