Big bots are back on the big screen in the new film Pacific Rim Uprising starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and Cailee Spaeny. This film picks up a few years after the last film leaves off with the world mostly at peace since the closing of the gateway and the Kaiju being killed off. Jake Pentecost (Boyega), son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba from the first film) is living his life by the seat of his pants. He crashes in busted up mansions, steals and trades for what he needs and is keeping his life far far away from the life of his father as a pilot.  When he gets busted trying to seat old Jaeger parts and having to fight another scavenger both are forced into the Jaeger program to prove their worth, Jake who is there to finish what he started and Amara Namani (Spaeny) who is there to train to become a pilot. Everything seems fairly simple for Jake and like he should be able to just go through the motions since the threat of an attack seems minimal, that is until a rouge Jaeger shows up and once again unleashes terror on the globe.

Okay, I want to start off by saying I love John Boyega in this film. He is sarcastic and fun to watch on the screen. Yes, he is a pain in the ass at times, but he is relatable and entertaining and that is the point right? Cilee Soaeny, our new face on the screen, is also really good in this film. neither of these characters is bigs fans of taking crap from anyone which is fun to watch. Scott Eastwood is somewhat stiff in this film, and despite being given major poster space, he role overall seems much smaller than a character poster deserves. While I do miss Charlie Hunnam terribly in this film, Boyega fills his shoes nicely. it is also nice seeing Rinko Kikuchi reprising her role as Mako Mori and also as Jake's sister. Other familiar faces you will see are Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb.

The action in the movie was pretty solid. I really enjoyed the Jaeger battles throughout the film. It was great getting to see multiple bots on the big screen duking it out and not holding back. The CGI looked good and the devil may care battle style these guys had and the damage they inflicted on the cities was just bananas.

Overall, I feel like if you were a fan of the first film you will probably be pretty into this one. For me personally, I liked the first film better, but this was still a nice addition to the franchise and they totally left it open for the possibility of more films to add on to this story which I would be down for. I scored this film with a solid B rating. It is a fun action movie and if robots and sci-fi are your things then this should be right up your alley.

Don't miss Pacific Rim Uprising in theaters everywhere March 23rd!
